Accommodation: Focusing the Eye

Accommodation is the ability of the lens to change its shape to focus on objects at different distances.

What happens to the lens shape when you look at a close object?

What is Accommodation: Focusing the Eye?

"Accommodation is the physiological process by which the vertebrate eye changes optical power to maintain a clear image or focus on an object as its distance varies."

Question 1

Which lens is used to correct myopia (short-sightedness)?

Question 2

What is the function of the retina in the eye?

Question 3

Which defect is corrected using a convex lens?

Focusing Mechanisms

Near objects: Ciliary muscles contract, suspensory ligaments loosen, lens becomes rounded and thick.

Distant objects: Ciliary muscles relax, suspensory ligaments tighten, lens becomes thin and flat.

Thicker lenses refract (bend) light more strongly.

Exam Tip

Remember "C-C-C" for close objects: Ciliary muscles Contract.
