The Fossil Record

Fossils are the "remains" of organisms from millions of years ago, providing evidence for evolution.

Why is the fossil record incomplete?

What is The Fossil Record?

"A fossil is the preserved remains or impressions of a prehistoric organism."

Question 1

How many times does the cell divide during meiosis?

Question 2

Why is understanding the human genome important for modern medicine?

Which group belongs to the domain Archaea rather than true bacteria?

Question 4

Evolutionary History

Fossils form from parts of organisms that have not decayed because one or more conditions needed for decay are absent.

When parts of the organism are replaced by minerals as they decay.

As preserved traces of organisms, such as footprints, burrows and rootlet traces.

We cannot be certain how life on Earth began because many early forms of life were soft-bodied, leaving few fossils.

Exam Tip
