Sampling Maths: Quadrats & Area
Ecological sampling relies on accurate mathematical scaling to estimate the population of entire ecosystems from small sample areas.
What formula is used to estimate a total population from quadrat samples?
What is Sampling Maths: Quadrats & Area?
"Sampling mathematics in ecology involves using statistical methods and scaling to estimate the size and distribution of populations based on representative samples."
Which term correctly completes this GCSE Biology equation or calculation statement? A ____ is the total of results ÷ number of results
Which term correctly completes this GCSE Biology equation or calculation statement? ____ change = (final − initial) ÷ initial × 100
Which option correctly completes the statement? In photosynthesis practicals, moving a lamp ____ increases light intensity

Quantitative Ecology
Mean per quadrat = Total count / Number of quadrats sample.
Estimated population = Mean per quadrat x (Total Area / Quadrat Area).
Always ensure the units for total area and quadrat area are consistent (e.g. both in m²).
Repeat sampling ensures the mean is representative and reduces the effect of anomalies.
Examiners often give the quadrat side length (e.g. 0.5m). You MUST calculate the area (0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25m²) before scaling.
