Chemistry Topic Practice

Reactions of Alkenes | GCSE Chemistry Practice

Alkenes react with hydrogen, water, and halogens by addition across the double bond.

What product is formed when ethene reacts with steam in the presence of a catalyst?

What is Reactions of Alkenes | Practice?

"Chemical reactions where atoms are added to the carbon-carbon double bond of an alkene."

Addition Reactions

Hydrogenation: Alkene + Hydrogen → Alkane (uses nickel catalyst).

Hydration: Alkene + Steam → Alcohol (uses acid catalyst).

Halogenation: Alkene + Halogen → Dihaloalkane (e.g. ethene + bromine).

The $C=C$ double bond "opens up" to bond with new atoms.

Exam Tip

Functional Group: The $C=C$ double bond makes alkenes much more reactive than alkanes.
