Bond Energy Calculations | GCSE Chemistry Practice
Energy is needed to break bonds and is released when bonds are formed.
Is bond breaking endothermic or exothermic?
What is Bond Energy Calculations | Practice?
"The calculation of the overall energy change in a chemical reaction using the energy required to break bonds and the energy released when making bonds."
In an exothermic reaction, what happens to the temperature of the surroundings?
What is the main environmental advantage of using fuel cells over petrol engines?
Which combination of metals in a cell will produce the HIGHEST voltage?
What are the two main components needed to make a simple chemical cell?
Making and Breaking
Energy change = sum of energy to break bonds - sum of energy released making bonds.
Bond breaking: Endothermic (requires energy).
Bond making: Exothermic (releases energy).
If the balance is negative, the overall reaction is exothermic.
Calc Tip: Be very careful with the signs! A negative energy change means heat is leaving the system (exothermic).
