Chemistry Topic Practice
Carboxylic Acids | GCSE Chemistry Practice
Carboxylic acids contain the -COOH functional group and behave as weak acids.
What is the functional group for carboxylic acids?
What is Carboxylic Acids | Practice?
"A homologous series of organic compounds containing the -COOH functional group."
Weak Organic Acids
First four: Methanoic, Ethanoic, Propanoic, Butanoic acid.
React with carbonates to produce CO2 (fizzing).
Naturally found in vinegar (ethanoic acid).
React with alcohols to form esters.
Exam Tip
Strength Tip: Like all weak acids, they only partially ionise in water, resulting in a higher pH than strong acids.
