Aqueous Rules

Cathode: Hydrogen is produced if the metal is MORE reactive than hydrogen.

Anode: Oxygen is produced unless halide ions (Cl-, Br-, I-) are present.

Water ionises into H+ and OH- ions.

Used in the industrial production of chlorine and hydrogen.

Exam Tip

Rule of Thumb: If you see "sulfate" or "nitrate", assume oxygen is produced at the anode.
