Chemistry Topic Practice

Electrolysis of Brine | GCSE Chemistry Practice

The electrolysis of concentrated sodium chloride solution (brine) produces three useful industrial products.

Name the three products of the electrolysis of brine.

What is Electrolysis of Brine | Practice?

"The electrolysis of concentrated sodium chloride solution to produce chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide."

Question 1

Which of these metals is the MOST reactive?

Question 2

Zinc is extracted from its ore by heating with carbon. This is because...

Question 3

Which of these metals will NOT react with dilute acid?

Question 4

In electrolysis, where do the positive ions (cations) move to?

Brine Products

Chlorine gas: Produced at the anode (used for bleach/plastics).

Hydrogen gas: Produced at the cathode (used for margarine/fuel).

Sodium Hydroxide solution: Left in the container (used for soap).

Chlorine is a halogen; hydrogen is produced because it is less reactive than sodium.

Exam Tip

Exam Prep: This is a classic "6-marker" topic. Make sure you can name all three products and their uses.
