Testing for Halide Ions | GCSE Chemistry Practice

Halide ions in solution can be identified using silver nitrate and nitric acid.

What color precipitate does bromide produce with silver nitrate?

What is Testing for Halide Ions | Practice?

"A chemical test used to identify halide ions using acidified silver nitrate solution."

Question 1

What color flame does a Sodium (Na+) ion produce?

Question 2

A student sees a lilac flame during a test. Which ion is present?

Question 3

Why can a flame test be unreliable if the sample is a mixture of ions?

Halide Colors

Chloride ($Cl^-$): White precipitate (Silver Chloride).

Bromide ($Br^-$): Cream precipitate (Silver Bromide).

Iodide ($I^-$): Yellow precipitate (Silver Iodide).

Nitric acid is added first to remove any carbonate impurities.

Exam Tip

Memory Trick: Milk (White), Cream (Cream), Butter (Yellow) for Chloride, Bromide, Iodide.
