Mains Electricity and Plug Safety | GCSE Physics

Safe handling of domestic electricity depends on the structure of the 3-pin plug and fuse.

Which wire in a plug is brown?

What is Mains Electricity and Plug Safety | GCSE Physics?

"The protective measures and components used to prevent electric shocks and fires in domestic settings."

Question 1

What is the unit of electrical resistance?

Question 2

Misconception: When a circuit is closed, the 'spent' current returns to the battery.

Question 3

Calculate the charge flow if a 3A current flows for 10 seconds.

Question 4

Current is the rate of flow of ____.

Safe Wiring

Live Wire (Brown): Carries 230V alternating PD from the supply.

Neutral Wire (Blue): Completes the circuit (0V).

Earth Wire (Green/Yellow): Safety wire; carries current to ground if there is a fault.

Fuses melt if current is too high, breaking the circuit.

Exam Tip

Mnemonic: Blue is for the "B-L-U-E-ve" (Neutral - left), Brown is for the "B-R-O-W-N-ight" (Live - right).
