Geotropism: Root Responses to Gravity

Geotropism (or gravitropism) is the growth response of a plant to the pull of gravity, ensuring roots grow deep into the soil.

How does auxin affect the growth of cells in a root?

What is Geotropism: Root Responses to Gravity?

"Geotropism is the growth of a plant in response to the force of gravity."

Question 1

Which answer best completes the statement? ____ involves giving a mother FSH and LH to stimulate eggs

Question 2

Choose the correct option to complete the statement. ____ is when blood vessels narrow to keep heat in

Question 3

Which answer best completes the statement? FSH causes an egg to ____ in the ovary

Question 4

Which answer best completes the statement? ____ is a waste product formed from the breakdown of proteins

Gravitropic Response

Roots are positively geotropic, meaning they grow towards the direction of gravity.

In a horizontal root, auxin accumulates on the lower side due to gravity.

Unlike shoots, high auxin concentration in roots inhibits cell elongation.

The cells on the upper side grow faster, causing the root to bend downwards.

Exam Tip

A common exam trick is to ask how a clinostat affects geotropism; it cancels out gravity by rotating the plant.

The fastest way to improve your grade is to practise exam-style questions, identify your gaps, and focus only on what you don't know.
